Haircut

 

Lexi has been wanting to get her hair cut again. I booked appointments with Laura. I went on Wednesday. She went today. Looks cute!

Silly Hair

Day of the Braids

There is a silly email/text going around the Jr High and Elementary telling all the girls to wear braids today to see if the boys notice. I knew the boys wouldn't notice, but it is kind of a unifying thing for the girls. I asked Lexi if she would like Jordan to spread the word around so that some boys may look. I took a few pictures of Lexi and our neighbor, Sofia, on our way to school this morning. 

Crazy Hair

It is crazy hair day today at school and the kids didn't want to miss out. I let Lexi and Jordan pick what they wanted and this is what they came up with. Miriam wanted in on the action and I figured that it was harmless enough, so she had blue tips too.

MAJOR HAIRCUT

Lexi and I have been talking about doing a major trim for a while. I felt she needed to get a lot of the dead ends cut off, especially after all the damage that occurred during swim team. She was interested, but not 100% on board. It is hard when something has become part of your identity, which is another reason I felt she should cut it. She is more than the hair on her head. She agreed and even wanted it cut. It came down to today and I cut about a foot off. As you can see in the pictures, she has mixed emotions about it. I see a nice healthy head of hair.

Sporty Clothes

Since Lexi started soccer, she has become more interested in sporty clothes.  I got her this outfit because it has the sports element along with a little sparkle.  I gave her this high french braid.  It seems a little more popular lately since Frozen came out.  Whenever she has her hair like this, little girls tell her she looks like Elsa.  She says it is annoying, but I think part of her likes it.  

Long Hair

Lexi's hair hasn't been cut in a long time.  I noticed that it is quite a bit longer.  I brushed out her hair this evening after her bath.  It is about an inch past her bum.  I've talked to her about cutting quite a bit off several times, but she doesn't even want to entertain the thought.

Funky Hair

I felt like doing something a little different with Lexi's hair today.  She was not happy about it.  She thought it looked horrible and decided to pout about it.  I told her she had to go to school like that anyway.  My mom told her that she really liked it, which helped.  By the time Lexi got home from school, she decided she liked it.  I guess she got quite a few compliments.  It will be a while before I do this again though.

I do different things with Lexi's hair most days.  As we were heading out, Lexi wanted to see the back.  I snapped a picture for her & decided to post it too.

Long Hair

I usually braid Lexi's hair, but today I let her wear it down.  I decided to take a few photos.  The top one is in our backyard and the bottom one is in the park across the street from our house.  

Crazy Hair Day

Lexi's school had a crazy hair day today.  I knew lots of kids and teachers would be wearing wigs, spraying their hair all different colors, and generally be looking fairly strange today.  We had plans after school, so I didn't want to get too funky.  I was also not happy that they made this into a fund raiser (professional fund raising school).  Anyone who wanted to participate was supposed to pay money.  I decided a happy medium would be best.  I gave Lexi funky braids.  That way, her hair wasn't "normal" but it also wasn't crazy enough for them to expect us to pay money.  

Lice Prevention

A little over a year and a half ago before I moved back to Texas, one of my good friends here quickly became a lice expert. She would treat it, but it kept going around her school and coming back again. She ended up doing a lot of research on the internet and driving herself half insane trying to completely rid her family of this problem. I remember her horror stories too well.

For some strange reason, I started talking about lice two weeks ago to another friend. We were talking about how horrible it would be. Like me, she has long hair and so does her daughter. She commented that she would probably go to a specialist and pay the $500 for them to get rid of it. I didn't know that was an option, but realistically, it is not an option for me to pay that kind of money. I was just glad that I hadn't heard of any cases.

Last Monday, I decided to shave Jordan’s hair. I had been thinking about letting it grow a little since winter is coming, but I pulled out the clippers and buzzed it off without even thinking about it. On Thursday, I was so glad I did. I got a note from his school saying a child had lice. All the kids were checked, but they wanted us to keep an eye out. Suddenly, I was so thankful to have a son that is too energetic to cuddle or lie down where other kids have been lying. Good thing, they don’t have nap time for his age at pre-school.

My alert level was definitely kicked up another notch this weekend when a friend whose kids attend a neighboring elementary told me that her daughter got lice last week. She said that the best treatment is olive oil in a shower cap for about an hour and using a flat iron. The chemical shampoo sold at the store is not only very harsh, but the lice have become resistant to it. She also recommended tea tree oil. I already use tea tree shampoo for the kids, so I didn't think too much about it. She lent us one of her flat irons in case we would need it.

I made sure to wash Lexi’s hair with tea tree shampoo last night. Another good practice that I already do is that I RARELY let Lexi go to school with her hair down or even in a pony tail. I was feeling pretty safe.

Yesterday evening, I took the kids on a walk. We saw one of my neighbors/friends and I asked her how she was doing. She said, “Horrible!” Then, she proceeded to explain that she just noticed her daughter in 4^th grade came home with lice. I told her about the olive oil and cap. As my kids and I walked home, I decided to kick up my lice prevention a notch. We headed to the grocery store and bought 2 bottles of tea tree oil (one for us & one for my neighbor). My kids will get a little drop on their necks every morning. Lexi will also not only have a braid; her hair will be up in a bun. I have cautioned her about hugging other kids and laying her head on their shoulders. Sadly, this is no time to be affectionate. 

Hair Today

I tried a unique hairstyle on Lexi for church today.  As you can see, it was a twisty french braid into a side bun.  It seems like all the teenagers love side braids, buns, and pony tails.  Lexi got loads of compliments.  When we got home, I realized I should probably take a picture.  Maybe it will help me to remember to do this again.    

Girly Sleep Over

Last night, there was a fun sleep over at our house.  The three girls (Hailey, Kara & Abby) that Lexi has been going to the movies with these last two weeks came over.  Lexi planned out the menus.  We had cheese ravioli and fruit salad for dinner.  Later, we had milk shakes (aka smoothies - kids seems to like them more when you use an unhealthy name for something that is very healthy).  We watch the Adventures of Tintin.  They were all asleep within about 15 minutes starting at 9:20pm.  They woke up about 7am.  We had more fruit salad and waffles for breakfast.  Then the girls wanted matching hair.  I gave them all french braids.  

Matching Hair

This morning, Lucy's dad dropped her off to spend a little time with Lexi before Lexi's dad picked her up for the day. Lucy saw me finishing up Lexi's french braids and wanted matching hair. It definitely isn't as easy to do two french braids on a girl with much thinner hair, but she was pleased.

School Picture Day

It is school picture day. I had Lexi wear her hair down for the first time. I thought it might end up a huge tangled mess by the end of the day, but she came back looking about the same. Hopefully, that means her pictures will turn out amazing.

New Hair Style

Lexi and I have seen a few hairstyles on the internet that she wants to try. This one is a fishbone braid made into a bun. I can't see it doing well through a whole day of school, so I thought church would be a better place to try it out. It looked pretty cute, but you can't see that it is a fishbone in these pictures.
