Literacy Night

The kids' elementary school held a Literacy Night.  They had a bunch of different stations.  We went to five.  Jordan and Lexi played games on iPads, made bookmarks, wrote stories, made a jersey with the theme of their favorite book, played games, and even played on a smart board.

Primary Program 2013

The children had their annual Primary Program at church today.  Since I teach the 9 year olds, so I was part of it too.  Each child had a chance to say something into the microphone.  They were assigned a speaking part according to their answers on a questionnaire that was handed out.  Lexi said, "We can pray anytime and anywhere in the whole world."  Between the age groups, the children sang primary songs. We were lucky to have good friends that came to watch.

Second Grade Fun Run

I went to the elementary school 5 times today.  In the morning, I dropped the kids off.  Next, I went to read to Jordan's class.  (I read to Lexi's class last week.)  The third time was to watch the kindergartners' fun run.  The fourth time was for the second grade fun run.  This is one of the big the fundraisers for the year.  The kids were supposed to get sponsors. Their t-shirts are marked after each lap.  The goal is 35 laps. Lexi ran almost 45.  I enjoyed cheering for them.  My last trip to the school was to pick the kids up at the end of the day.  I even managed to get quite a bit of work done during my trips home.

First Choir Performance

The kids' choir director decided to use the choir practice as a performance today.  She mentioned that the kids really seem to understand what it is all about once they get on stage.  I didn't have high expectations since they have only had 4 practices, but I enjoyed it.  Lexi's group sang 2 songs.  The recording is a bit shaky because Jordan was sitting on my lap.

Dr Appointment

Lexi had a wellness exam this morning.  She is 55 lbs, which is in the 50th percentile.  She is 50.25", which is in the 60th percentile.  The doctor said that she has a very good BMI.  I had the doctor check out the awful mosquito bites all over her bottom & legs.  This is the first year that Lexi has had horrible reactions to their bites.  I've noticed lots of kids with them.  Jordan has had a few.  The doctor also said she has never had this many patients ask about them before.  Anyway, something crazy is happening here.

Columbus Day at the Park

The kids didn't have school today.  The school district likes to make Columbus Day a teacher prep day so the kids can have it off.  I took Lexi and Jordan to a park in Old Katy.  We walked around the lake and then played.

Rice Harvest Festival

This weekend is the annual Rice Harvest Festival in Katy.  In all the years that I have lived here, I don't think I've ever been before.  This year, Jordan's and Lexi's choir was scheduled to perform at 6pm.  I thought it would be fun to go to the Festival in the afternoon.  We headed that way, but it was raining a little.  I decided that we should hang out in the mall, which is nearby.  We walked around and went to Bass Pro Shop.  That is where we took the picture above.  Lexi and Jordan don't know who the cardboard cutouts are, but they enjoyed taking a picture with them.

When the rain seemed to be clearing, we headed over to the festival.  We took a picture with an old fire truck, walked around looking at booths, ate dinner, and checked out the stage that they would be performing on.  About that time, I got a text saying that choir director was going to cancel because the stage was wet.  We watched a taekwondo troupe perform and noticed quite a few of them slipped and fell.  Lexi and Jordan were a bit disappointed, but we stopped for a funnel cake on the way out and all was good.

Halloween Shirts

There was a slight dip in the temperature here, so I thought it would be a perfect day for the kids to wear their Halloween shirts.  The high was actually 81 today, but this might be as good as it will be for a while.  Lexi's shirt says "Looking Spooktacular."

Bracelet Queen

Like most kids, Lexi and Jordan are very interested in the rubber band bracelets.  Her classmates are actually having a contest to see who can wear the most on Monday.  I bought a bag this weekend so that the kids could make their own.  They got right on it.

Gold for Honor

Today, the school asked the kids to wear gold for the characteristic of honor.  I doubt most kids happen to have gold clothes, so I just helped them pick something similar.  This happens to be an outfit that Lexi fell in love with at the store.  It isn't my style, but it was inexpensive and we were school shopping, so I bought it for her.

Special Braid

I do different things with Lexi's hair most days.  As we were heading out, Lexi wanted to see the back.  I snapped a picture for her & decided to post it too.

Hurt at School

This afternoon, I got a call from the school nurse.  She told me that Lexi had hurt her back on the playground.  I said I would pick her up.  She told me that she was swinging from the bottom of a bridge and then her fingers slipped.  One of her friends did the same thing.  The scrape wasn't bad, but she whined every time she moved.  I let her read a few books and relax for the rest of the day.

Math Night

This evening, the kids had math night at their school.  We haven't attended these things before, but I read that the school gives out homework passes for those who attend.  It was a fun night with lots of math games.

Extra Recess

Since the kids' school only allows 20 minutes for recess, I walked them over to the playground to get out some of their energy this evening.  They had fun.

BYU Cougar Fans In Enemy Territory

Today, the kids randomly decided to wear their BYU Cougar shirts.  I couldn't believe it, especially since BYU just beat the University of Texas in football this weekend.  Football is serious business around here.  Both of them mentioned that their teachers said they had watched the game.  That was about all they said.

End of Summer Pool Time

When school started, the local pools closed during the week and are only open on the weekends for the rest of the month.  We went today to make sure that we can get the last bit of swimming in.

Second Week of 2nd Grade

The second week of school started off with Labor Day.  We spent the day at pools with close friends.  This was a busy week.  This evening, we went to the elementary school for 2nd grade orientation.  We all went because I didn't have a babysitter.  Lexi and Jordan sat in the hallway, while I was in Lexi's classroom.  There were a few other kids with them.

Wednesday was the day that the kids were supposed to wear silver/gray for character development.

Thursday evening the kids had an audition for a local children's choir.  It officially starts in 2 weeks.

Spirit Day - I had to get the kids new school shirts.  Apparently, the ones they had were "so last year."  I can't complain really about that since they've had them for 2 years.  These shirts also look better.
